(not my photo.. i’ve pretty much given up taking food porn pictures.. making the food takes enough time haha) i like to pretend i can cook by taking recipes from vegan food blogs with pretty pictures and attempting to replicate them haha. like tonight i made this pizza. it was pretty tasty indeed, and it did look pretty. simple, just roasted tomatoes and a basil cashew cheese, and i used lavash instead of a tortilla, but delicioius nonetheless.

i also roasted a ton of veggies and made a ton of granola. woooooohoo friday night!

last weekend was good.. friday was my 3rd veganiversary, so i made pizza with jena, will, and sri. we made this pizza, and it came out amazing. we also made one with a tomato-based sauce that we made up and yellow squash, spinach, and zucchini. with a little more planning that one could have been excellent.. i wanted eggplant and pepper but didn’t have any. it took forever to make the pizzas but it was soooo worth it.

saturday will and i went to LA - he had his improv class and during that time i walked around hollywood and sunset blvds, people-watched, counted bikes, and soaked up some glorrrrrrious sunshine at a fountain on the corner of sunset and vine.

after his class we got a snack (summer rolls) at a place called the vegan house. then we went to the observatory at griffith park as the sun was setting and it was beautiful and mind-boggling at the same time. mountains and national forest on one side, concrete jungle, then ocean. nuts.

then we met up with siobhan, who lives in sherman oaks, for dinner at a place called the vegan plate (if there’s one awesome thing about la, it’s probably the vast amount of vegan food). the restaurant was having their 7th anniversary that night, so when our waitress (super nice) gave us our check, she had me reach into a bowl of paper slips and i pulled one out and it said “50% off,” so we got 50% off our bill. it was great. i also ate my ENTIRE dish of spicy thai noodles. SO MUCH GOOD VEGAN FOOD.

afterwards we went to the brickyard pub in north hollywood with siobhan and a bunch of her friends, who mostly all went to ithaca college, coincidentally enough, but i didn’t know any of them because they were all in the park school of communications (which i did not associate with at all because those students were always disgustingly cliquey). there are so many ic alums in LA (mostly cinema/tv/radio majors) that the bar had an ithaca beer. i was exhausted so we left and crashed at will’s friend’s apartment in santa monica.. he also went to ic but i didn’t know him either; will studied abroad with him in spain.

sunday we went to the santa monica farmers’ market, which was beautiful, and then walked down to venice beach and the boardwalk.. what a cool, funky place. so socal. top notch people-watching. then we walked back along the beach, and stopped at a whole foods because i’ve been craving this one chocolate bar - chocolove dark chocolate with almonds and sea salt (i’m obsessed). naturally that was the one kind they were out of at whole foods, but i got a different one instead AND they had an entire case of VEGAN PASTRIES. i basically died. but before that i got a vegan donut, chocolate glazed with sprinkles! it was pretty bomb. also as we were sitting outside eating i could have sworn regina spektor just walked/half ran right by me in the parking lot. i literally stared at her the whole time she was passing me like a creep. who knows if it was her though, i’ve never seen her live, so i dunno. she was kinda short.

finally we left and took the long way home via highway 1 through malibu, oxnard, ventura, and then highway 33 through ojai (funniest name ever) and the gorgeous mountains of the los padres national forest, just as the sun was setting.

when we got back, the next day i had off so i went for a bike ride. it was soooo sunny and felt like a summer day. and now i have the beginnings of a bike short tan.. with that plus my awesome raging chaco tan, i think i’m doing pretty well for february!

what a good weekend. recap:

friday.. drove from bakersfield via I-5, cut over to santa cruz and took highway 1 north. pulled off at a place unbeknownst to us called jah beach/ship rock at davenport, which was insanely beautiful.

then we continued on highway 1 (beautiful drive) until we got to half moon bay state park, where we camped for the night. we made some bomb burritos of quinoa, black beans, corn, carrots, onions, peppers, and garlic. yummmmeh. then we had a fire and got in our tent and played “truth or truth” - sex or non-sex.. hahahaha.

saturday.. i got up and went for a run on the beach, which was lovely; the waves were huge and beautiful and it was a gorgeous sunny day. then we ate breakfast, packed up, and headed north to san francisco. along the way we stopped at the half moon bay brewing company for beers and just sat soaking up the sunshine for a little while. there were soooo many people there. it felt like a summer day.

once we got through the traffic and made it to our hotel (which we’d booked on friday via jena’s phone for $80, so we weren’t sure what to expect), we checked in, threw our stuff in the room (which turned out to be exactly what we needed), and then chilled for a hot sec before going to goodwill to find will something to wear that night. he found a sweet shirt and some pants. then we walked around some more, stopped at a random thai place for beers, then a sandwich shop that my friend’s friend works at. last time i was in sf for hardly strictly my friend and i stayed with her, and she made us these AMAZING sandwiches, which she just gave to us, so i wanted to go back and get another one from her. she made us all sandwiches and gave me mine for free again (i left a tip though). it was delicious.. so good i ate the entire thing right there haha.

after that we went back to the hotel and got ready for the COSMIC LOVE BALL at the legendary fillmore, featuring rubblebucket, a lovely band that’s just a lot of fun. jena, elizabeth and i all made our outfits, and i still had to finish making mine, and then i messed it up so elizabeth had to help me make it work, but it turned out ok in the end thankfully. so then we walked to the fillmore (we were so lucky our hotel was within walking distance.. not to mention the free parking spot we nabbed) and i got my 4 free tickets (turned out i won 2 pairs in 2 contests i’d entered online.. but i already bought one for jena so we had an extra one in the end). the fillmore was really cool.. so many awesome historic show posters, cool vibe, fun crowd.

the first band that played was the north beach brass band, who were fun and funky, and then materialized, who were also fun but more psychedelic and electronic. finally rubblebucket came on and they were super fun as per usual. overall lots of dancing and smiling happened. at the end of their set rubblebucket got down off the stage and walked through the crowd playing “pain from love,” possibly my second favorite of their songs. then they were done and will insisted that i meet kal and alex, the lead band members, and get pictures with them. they were both super cute and really cool.

after the show we walked back, and basically just went to bed around 3:30 or so. we were all covered in glitter, our veins were flowing with endorphins, and i’m pretty sure our hearts were all swollen with cosmic love :3

sunday.. we sort of slept in, got up, packed up, and hit the road. we stopped in palo alto because we wanted to get breakfast somewhere, and will said palo alto was pretty. we ate at the palo alto cafe; i got a “peet and larry,” which was mustard, tomato, pickle, and avocado on a toasted sesame bagel. it was actually delicious.

we stopped again at broken earth winery in paso robles for a wine tasting. it was interesting, even though i don’t drink and know nothing about wine. seemed like a very bourgeosie thing to do, which was amusing.

then we were back in bakersfield and that was depressing. but it was such a great weekend, which always completely makes up for the time i have to spend here. till the next adventure..

good article. a lot of it is pretty basic common sense and things i rant about incessantly (even though i use facebook), but much of it may also be enlightening to others. conversely, i think a lot of people are starting to realize the conclusions drawn in this article, too.

it’s a long one, so here are some excerpts that stood out to me if you can’t make it through the whole thing:

hey, national public lands day is on my birthday this year!

i don’t think most people realize the importance of public lands.. they belong to all of us, and therefore we all have the right to enjoy them. more people need to spend more time outside, that’s for damn sure. but given the right to use them, that also means we are responsible for taking care of our lands and developing a sense of stewardship/land ethic (see: aldo leopold’s a sand county almanac).
